Monthly BSE Remains an Essential Tool as Part of Three-step Approach to Breast Health frontline The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's Newsletter Fall 2002
"The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation maintains its recommendation that women age 20 years and older practice monthly breast self-examination (BSE). This recommendation follows the recently published findings of a 10-year Chinese study that says BSE shows little impact on decreasing the mortality rate from breast cancer. The study appears in the October 2 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
[However,] 'Based on the results of this study, it is important that women understand the role of BSE as part of a three-step process and not as a stand-alone method of early detction," said Rebecca Garcia, PhD, vice president of health sciences for the Komen Foundation. 'Breast self-examination is something all women can do to take charge of their own health. It is private, it's free and it can be done at home.' "
