The Extending Boundaries Project is designed to help African American women develop the confidence and skills to perform breast self-exams and practice early detection behaviors (getting clinical breast exams and mammograms). Women who are interested in becoming lay health educators will be trained to use either the Everyday Wellness for Women Model (EWFW) or the Witness Project (WP) model to disseminate information about breast health care and to encourage women to help other women in their communities to take care of themselves. The entire program is designed to last 1 1/2 hours and includes a meal. Childcare will be provided on an as-needed basis. The Extending Boundaries staff will evaluate how well the strategies used in the EWFW model and the WP model influence women’s knowledge, attitudes, and early detection screening practices.
The 1 1/2 hour program will include the following components
- Introduction and program Overview
