Program Director
Mary Shaw-Ridley, Ph.D., CHES

Dr. Mary Shaw-Ridley is an educator, scholar, and researcher whose primary interests are minority health issues, curriculum/program development and evaluation. Her research has primarily been focused on health behavior and improving delivery of health care services to medically underserved communities. Currently she is directing research and programs related to HIV, breast cancer, and diabetes. She is a consultant on several projects related to delivery of health care services to minority communities. Dr Shaw-Perry currently is an Associate Professor at Indiana University in the Department of Applied Health Sciences in Bloomington, IN. Prior to coming to Indiana University she spent seven years at Texas Woman's University in the Department of Health Studies in Denton TX.

Summary of Professional Characteristics
Preparation for teaching, research, and administrative roles in public school or higher education includes four years of administrative experience in public schools, eleven years of full-time teaching experience in secondary education, five years in higher education, and more than twelve years of community service/consultancy.  The latter includes leadership in planning and implementing community health programs, school curricula, teacher staff development activities, adopt-a-school programs, parent/community education programs designed to enhance the instructional programs in public schools and promote community health. A 1995 research/dissertation study that compared strategies for promoting breast cancer screening practices among African American women contributed to an understanding of how to design culturally sensitive interventions for health promotion endeavors in minority communities.

In addition to maintenance of this website, Ms. Whitright contibutes to this project on many levels including public relations, promotions, event coordination, and business operations. Ms. Whitright earned her MBA in marketing at Texas Woman's University and will soon add a PhD to her credentials in the field of health education. Ms. Whitright's area of interest is in social marketing (promoting causes for the good of individuals and society) and she is excited about being able to contribute to this very special cause to help women.

 

Research Associate

Jennifer McMillian, MPH, CHES

Originally from Gary, Indiana Jennifer Scott McMillian received both her Bachelor of Science in Public Health Education and her Master of Public Health from Indiana University in 1995 and 1997 respectively.  She began her career as an intern with the local chapter of the American Cancer Society in Bloomington, Indiana. 
 
Jennifer's professional experience includes positions with The Associates in Health (Irving, Texas), South Dallas Health Access (Dallas, Texas) and The La Sima Foundation, Inc. (Dallas, Texas).  Jennifer spoke on “Developing effective outreach programs for African American women” at the Oklahoma State HIV/AIDS Conference and a Leadership Training Institute focusing on issues facing women with HIV/AIDS.  She also sat on ad hoc committees dealing with this same issue.  In 1999 she received her certification as a health education specialist (CHES).  Jennifer is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Health Studies at Texas Woman’s University.
